Basic Training Center (formerly known as Assam’s Teacher Training School), Kokrajhar situated near the J.D. Road Kokrajhar is one of the oldest training center of post Independence. It was established in the year 1948 by the Government of Assam based on Gandhian philosophy of Basic Education. The Premier Institution was established in a sprawling campus of an area of 26568.8 sq.m. The institution has been imparting quality teacher training education since the time of its inception in an around Kokrajhar and neighboring districts. The institution strives to bring proficiency among the teachers thus bringing transformation in the quality teaching profession.
Initially the Institution was under the control of Basic Education, Assam. The Institution has been rechristened as Basic Training Center, Kokrajhar since 1958.
This Institution was taken over by the Govt. of Assam on 1st August 1962 vide Govt. order No. EBS 91/59/45 dated 19th August 1962 for better functioning of the Institution. The Institution has been serving as a nodal elementary teacher training center offered by the training center was Assam Teachers Certificate (Training Class) Examination. At a later stage Junior Basic Teacher Examination course was introduced in the year 1962.
It was a sole Assamese medium center at the time of its inception but during the later stage both Assamese and Bodo medium was introduced in the year 1972. Subsequently the center was made sole Bodo medium on 1984 as it is located at tribal areas. The reason behind the introduction of Bodo medium is to cater the needs and aspiration of Bodo population thus improving the quality of life through education among the common Bodo masses who are educating their children in Bodo medium Schools.
Apart from curricular activities this Institution undertake various co-curricular activities like games and sports, cultural, social works and awareness campaign on various common social issues.
Formally the Institution offered both pre-service and in-service teacher training course with an intake capacity of 150 trainees per year.
Basic Training Center, Kokrajhar is having adequate infrastructure facility for teacher training course. Apart from Administrative and Academic Building there are 3 (Three) hostel facility with an intake capacity of 150. There is staff quarter facility also available for teaching and non-teaching staff.
